Kindergarten
Grade 1
Social Studies, ELA and ICT learner outcomes are addressed in these lessons, as students build understandings, create a Wordle and use a Venn Diagram. One lesson uses a schema chart to activate, build and revise learner understandings. Children reference the book, The Little House, in some learning activities. Provided resources include book titles, reputable web links, and a couple of assessment ideas.
Grade 2
Lessons are based in Social Studies and ICT learner outcomes, utilizing "Live Binder" with SMART Boards. Detailed descriptions are included for teacher reference. After exploring some of Canada's community flags (I.e. Nunavut, Acadian and Ukrainian), by discovering some meanings of history, symbols and traditions, students create a unique flag of their own, keeping the importance of colour and symbols in mind. A student benchmark page is included.
In small groups, students create a digital magazine cover along with internal pages by using the tools, "Big Huge Labs" and Notebook software. Groups choose 1 of 3 Canadian communities featured in the Gr. 2 Social Studies' program, presenting their "magazines" to peers and the teacher. Step-by-step guidelines, a template, reference to specific learner outcomes, materials, resources, technologies and a rubric are all included.
Social Studies and ICT learner outcomes are clearly identified in this short lesson plan, along with a rubric for teachers to use. The plan builds on the Pearson textbook resource.
In this lesson plan, students engage in an initial investigation of the specific community of Beiseker, Alberta, noting some characteristics of their home area.
