    Perspective on Economic Globalism

    This 10-1 learning activity focuses on how globalization is experienced by diverse, international communities, as student partners explore primary resources and create a 2-3 minute digital story in first person narrative format. Relevant, reputable weblinks are provided in the following areas: technology, digital story-telling, globalization content and media.     Grade 11

    Identifying Nationalism

    This cumulative project and/or current affairs' tracker is designed for 5 class periods of 80 minutes each. Historical thinking skills, deliberative inquiry,and communication outcomes are addressed as students explore historical "significance" and use a web-based timeline, learning more about nationalism sentiment. They compare one global event with a Canadian one. A formative assessment tool and an assessment rubric are provided.


    Digital Current Events

    On a bi-weekly basis, students examine current events that transpire provincially, nationally, and/or internationally within the Social Studies' context. Connections are made between the events and geographic locations, using technology. Required and suggested online resources help to address critical , creative and geographic thinking skills. Related Issue #3 is focused upon as students learn about specific current events, using provided guiding questions and flickr. A formative assessment tool and an evaluative rubric are included.

    Genocide in the Twentieth Century

    20-1 & 20-1 students develop a deeper understanding of twentieth century catastrophic events and their connections to ultranationalism as they work with a partner to create a digital scrapbook from one groups' perspective. Students research genocides from a provided list of choices. Research resources are suggested, as are teacher notes, proper citation practices, and a rubric. Google Docs and pertinent weblinks are provided/referenced.

    Reducing Poverty

    Related Issue #3 is explored by 20-2 students by reviewing some case studies, ranking them with the use of specified criteria, and then making recommendations to the G8 by creating a commercial. A student assignment sheet, credible websites, teacher hints and a rubric are provided with this week-long project.


    Current Events and Nationalism

    Throughout an entire semester, 20-1 and 20-2 students create a digital timeline, accompanied by write-ups according to posted requirements. Students demonstrate the development of nationalism in contemporary society, using current events over time. Technology infusion tools include: X-Timeline, Ten by Ten, and Citation Machine. A student assignment sheet , credible websites and a rubric are provided.


    Canadian Confederation: Investigating Perspectives

    Students come to an appreciation of multiple perspectives that helped to shape Canadian confederation by creating and sharing a Voice Thread with peers. Various "voices" provide opinions on confederation, as learners respond to posed questions on the provided student assignment sheet, and as they respond to the posted summary questions. A rubric that focuses on historical perspectives is included with this project.
