    Grade 1


    Uncovering the Stories of Our Community Landmarks

    Addressing Social Studies and ICT learner outcomes pertaining to geographic thinking, Gr. 1 classes are able to explore students' communities, learning about natural and human landmarks, developing photographic skills and composing digital captions/stories. Rubrics and self assessment included.

    Family: Surveying the Generations

    Gr.1 students develop some early historical thinking skills by utilizing a survey in which personal connections are made between the past and present. Learner outcomes are clearly identified; rubrics and self assessment are included.


    Gr.1 classes create a "digital museum" in which personal artifacts are celebrated in the class context. The core concept of "identity" is the focus of this work, with rubrics and self assessment provided.


    Grade 2


    Natural Resources in Canadian Communities

    Exploring community economic characteristics and natural resources in 3 geographic areas lies at the heart of this Gr. 2 work, drawing upon group investigation. A group poster project is undertaken, with a short checklist included.


    Occupations in Canadian Communities

    Gr. 2 classes explore the inter-relationship between natural resources resources and occupations in which people work. A brief checklist is included.


    A Community in the Past: How Did My Community Start?

    Students actively dialogue with older community members, building a class digital story regarding origins of the community they call "home". Detailed ideas and hints are provided, along with a self-assessment table. Social Studies and ICT outcomes are addressed.


    Goods and Services in Our Community

    Gr. 2 classes begin to build some conceptual understandings of goods and services, creating an E-scrapbook in which pertinent, local discoveries are posted. Helpful hints/possibilities are provided.


    Communities in Canada

    Essential physical, geographic thinking questions are posed for student investigation of a few Canadian communities. Students are also encouraged to examine some changes over time. Publisher resource assessment tools are referenced.


    Interpreting the Past, Connecting to the Present

    Gr. 2 classrooms can engage in the vibrancy of Voice Threads, discovering "voices" of the past and making connections to the present through the usage of inquiry-based questions. Some Critical Thinking Consortium resources have been modified; a teacher checklist is provided, as are rubrics.


    Changes Over Time

    Students will immerse themselves in some historical thinking as well as problem-solving skills as they discover some links between the past and the present through inquiry questionning. Options for SMART Board usage and/or individual computers are outlined. SMART Notebook software, some T-charts and other best practices are included.


    Shaping a Community's Identity: Acadian, Inuit, Prairie WebQuest

    Through a WebQuest, classes engage in historical and geographic thinking skills, continuing to develop attitudes and values, based on specific Social Studies' and ICT learner outcomes. A table, rubric and checklist are provided, along with other best practices.


    Grade 3


    Students discover various linguistic and cultural components of highlighted world nations using reputable websites. Possible learning strategies, tables for learner goals, and rubrics are shared for all to use and/or adapt.


    Which Way is North?

    Geographic thinking skills are interwoven with investigations regarding quality of life in India, Tunisia, the Ukraine and Peru, using a variety of concrete classroom tools along with online tools. A rubric is included.


    We Are All Connected

    Gr. 3 classes come to deeper understandings of and appreciation for Canada's role in global citizenship as pertains to designated world nations. Some vetted literature samples, websites (with student and teacher resources/ideas), possible service projects and more, are shared for usage in these explorations.


    In Search of Cinderella

    Educators and students can choose from a variety of learning activities to explore cultural characteristics that formulate some aspects of quality of life through the exploration of folktales and digital storytelling. Identity and cultural diversity are highlighted. Some rubrics are included.


    Through various literature sources and credible websites, Gr. 3 classes can explore current and possible rights and responsibilities in various nations around the world. Evidence of student learning can be explored through a variety of shared possibilities. A group work rubric is provided.
